Dental Crowns

Restoring your teeth.

Crowns are an excellent solution to a variety of dental issues. If you’re experiencing regular pain or can visibly see damage to a tooth, it might be a sign that you need to have a crown placed.

What is a crown?

Crowns are tooth-shaped caps which are shaped to resemble a natural tooth, and can be made from a variety of materials including metal, porcelain or resin. A dental crown is great at fixing significant cracks and damage, as they can help to prevent further damage from occurring, and they keep the nerves inside the tooth safe.

Signs you need a crown

Crowns are used as part of dental implant treatments and are recommended in most cases after a root canal procedure to finish the restoration. We also recommend replacing overly large fillings with a crown, as they are more stable and better prevent the tooth from further damage. Here are other key signs that indicate you may need a crown:

  • Visibly chipped, cracked or broken teeth
  • Severe tooth decay
  • A large existing filling
  • Significant discolouration
  • A recent root canal or dental implant procedure

Our crown procedure

A full dental crown procedure is completed over a few appointments, to ensure your tooth is well prepared and the crown is made to fit perfectly. Our crown process follows these steps:

  • Preparation. We usually start by removing a thin layer of enamel to reshape your tooth so it can better fit a dental crown.
  • Impressions. Once your tooth is prepared, we take a detailed mould of it so that the dental crown can be custom-made to fit your tooth’s dimensions perfectly.
  • Placement. When the crown is ready, we bond it to your tooth using special dental adhesive. You may need to wear a temporary crown while the final one is being prepared.

Aftercare

Getting a dental crown is a relatively simple procedure, though it is important to look after your tooth and mouth properly in the ensuing recovery period. Proper care includes keeping up your regular oral hygiene practices and returning to see us for regular check-ups.

Patients should avoid eating hard and sticky foods for the first few days after the procedure, to avoid damaging or dislodging the crown. We also recommend avoiding overly hot or cold foods, as they can cause sensitivity. We will provide you with detailed instructions after your treatment to help you look after your new crown.

FAQs

How much does a dental crown cost?

The cost of a dental crown will vary depending on which tooth requires the crown, and the type of material used. At Oakleigh, our crown treatments start from $1900.

As crowns are most often made from porcelain, ceramics or resin, they will not be affected by the chemical agents in whitening treatments. However, they will be unlikely to stain or change colour unlike your natural teeth which you can then whiten to try to match the crowns.

Dental crowns can last from 5 to 15 years, and often longer, if you properly look after them with brushing and regular check ups. Avoiding negative habits like teeth grinding can help to prolong their lifespan.

Having a crown placed takes at least two appointments. We use the first appointment to prepare your tooth and take detailed impressions, and then place the crown and bond it to your tooth in the second appointment.
