Veneers

An affordable solution to cover discoloured or chipped teeth.

Enjoy a bright smile

At Oakleigh Dental, we offer dental veneers designed to improve the shade and aesthetics of your smile. Veneers help patients with gaps, damage or stained teeth.

What are dental veneers?

A veneer is a layer of material placed over the tooth, made of durable porcelain or composite resin. Veneers cover discoloured or chipped teeth and adhere to the original tooth surface, providing you with a bright smile for years.

How do veneers work?

Veneers attach on top of the teeth, making them less invasive than other treatments to fix your teeth. Dental veneers can fit over any number of teeth, but we recommend getting an even number. This ensures a clean, symmetrical look. Often, veneers are placed on the upper teeth only, but they can attach to the lower teeth.

Veneers process

The dental veneer procedure is one of the most effective ways to brighten your teeth.

  • Check-Up and Clean. A dentist examines your teeth for any issues that might affect the process. Your teeth are thoroughly cleaned to prevent any bacteria or food particles from getting trapped underneath the veneers.
  • Tooth Preparation. Typically we shave away a thin layer of your teeth to create an appropriate surface for your veneer to adhere to. Prepping teeth for veneers allows each veneer to attach comfortably on your teeth. At first, placement occurs without any adhesive to ensure that you and your dentist are happy with the look.
  • Dental Cement. Once you are both satisfied with the appearance, your dentist will apply a dental bond on each tooth surface that will have a veneer.
  • Application. After we place your veneers, we shine an ultraviolet light to accelerate the bonding process and harden the dental cement quickly. Generally we repeat this process to ensure the right appearance.
  • After Care. Once your dentist has bonded veneers and is happy with how they look, you can start flashing your new smile and eating as normal. However, we recommend having a follow-up appointment to ensure you are comfortable with your veneers and looking after them properly.

Types of veneers

There are two main types of veneers: porcelain and composite resin. Porcelain veneers are strong and highly durable, and made to closely resemble the look of your natural teeth. By comparison, composite veneers are moderately durable but easier to damage, meaning you may need to replace them more often. We can fit composite resin veneers in a single visit, but they are more susceptible to staining.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers are very durable and, when cared for properly, will last for around 10 to 15 years on average. However, just like natural teeth, the health of your veneers is dependent on how well you look after them. All patients should brush their veneers at least twice a day to ensure that their polished whiteness remains. Veneers may also chip or break if hit with enough force or put under too much pressure.

FAQs

Are veneers permanent?

Unfortunately veneers are not permanent, but should last at least 10 years with appropriate care, including daily brushing and flossing. They may last much longer than 10 years. As with your natural teeth, it is recommended that you attend a dental appointment every 6 months to look after them.

For those looking to improve the appearance of their teeth without veneers, other cosmetic dental options include teeth whitening, dental bonding or cosmetic contouring. To improve the overall position of your teeth, it would be better to consider orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign.

Veneers are very safe when installed properly, and do not ruin your natural teeth. It is possible to get cavities underneath veneers but this only happens if you are not brushing and flossing properly.

Veneers can provide the illusion of a straighter smile by being placed over the top of your natural teeth. However, purchasing veneers for crooked teeth treatment will not actually straighten or affect the position of your teeth. It is possible to get veneers with crooked teeth, but if your teeth are severely misaligned, we would strongly recommend receiving orthodontic treatment first.

People with stained or chipped teeth are ideal for veneers. However, if you have extensive tooth decay, veneers will not provide any effective treatment beyond covering it up, and your teeth will continue to decay behind them. Individuals who grind their teeth will also damage any veneers they wear. If you have existing dental or orthodontic issues, it is highly recommended that you seek other treatment to remedy those before pursuing veneers.

During the process of preparing teeth and attaching veneers, the patient’s mouth is numbed and they should not feel any pain. In cases where a lot of veneers are attached, you may experience some gum and jaw discomfort once the numbing effect wears off, but using over the counter medications may help with this.

It is rare that one of your veneers will detach, but in the case that it does, try and keep the veneer safe in a small container but do not attempt to re-attach it. Call us immediately and book an appointment as soon as you can, where we will advise whether we are able to repair and re-attach it.

It is necessary to prepare the tooth underneath for a veneer whether it be made of composite or porcelain, but the degree of preparation or shaving required is usually minimal. You may not require any anaesthetic or numbing at all. Some patients may only require a cleaning of the tooth surface to remove any imperfections that may interfere with applying the veneer, such as stains or roughness.
