Invisalign

The clearer way to a happier smile.

Clear Teeth Straightening

Orthodontic treatment is an important process for many people to correct their bite and the positioning of their teeth. We are a proud Platinum Invisalign dentist in Melbourne, helping you get the beautiful smile you deserve.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign braces are removable orthodontic appliances that use a series of custom-fit, virtually invisible trays to achieve straighter teeth. These clear aligners are made of flexible thermoplastic material and are an entirely removable orthodontic option. Their clear design ensures you can receive treatment without it being noticeable.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign aligners exert gentle pressure on your teeth to guide them into correct position when they are misaligned. As you go through treatment and your teeth move, you will receive new aligners so that your teeth can continue moving into the right position. Unlike fixed orthodontics, Invisalign is a convenient option that does not disrupt your eating and teeth cleaning habits.

Who can get invisalign?

Invisalign treatment is best for treating mild and moderate misalignment issues, such as crowded teeth, gapped teeth and minor malocclusions. It is also possible to treat more severe cases with the use of supportive elastics or rubber bands. While it is a desirable orthodontic treatment due to its efficiency and discreet appearance, it is unfortunately not suitable for every patient.

Invisalign for children

Teeth position constantly changes as the jaw grows, so children under 7 should not get Invisalign. It is more common for teens and older children because patients must be mature enough to wear the trays for at least 22 hours a day. If there are still any baby teeth present, your Invisalign dentist will not recommend getting aligners. If your child’s jaw is not developing correctly, your dentist will recommend an alternative course.

Invisalign for adults

The virtually invisible aligners are a perfect option for adults hoping to receive orthodontic treatment discreetly. As a removable option, they offer a convenient alternative to fixed braces. With shorter appointment times and fewer checkups, Invisalign suits the busier schedule of most adults.

Our process

We follow a comprehensive process to ensure we offer treatment in a way that Oakleigh families can trust!

  1. Teeth Examination: To begin, your dentist will examine your mouth and the existing position of your teeth to determine whether Invisalign is a suitable option to treat you.

  2. Moulding: If you’re suitable, your dentist will use digital scans and x-rays to create a model of your mouth and teeth. Your dentist then uses a special software program to plan out a custom treatment plan based on the tooth movements required to straighten your teeth. This data is sent to a laboratory to create custom aligner trays for you.

  3. Fitting: Your dentist will place your new aligners when they arrive, checking that they fit and will exert enough pressure to move your teeth. Your dentist may opt to place attachments, which are small ‘bumps’ that bond to the teeth and allow the aligners to grip the teeth more effectively.

  4. Replacements: Your trays will need to be replaced multiple times throughout your treatment course. Your dentist will advise how often they want you to come in for a check-up, and when you will need to transition to your next set of trays.

FAQs

How much is Invisalign?

The total cost of Invisalign will vary based on how long you are undergoing treatment, and how many sets of aligners you need. More severe cases take longer to fix, and therefore require a more extensive treatment course. Full treatment typically comes in between $6000 and $9000, though it can be paid off in instalments. The length of your Invisalign treatment will vary depending on the severity of your misalignment, and whether you wear your aligners properly every day. A typical course will take between 12 and 18 months, though it has the potential to be shorter or longer than that depending on the individual. Invisalign for adults tends to take longer than for teenagers, as adults jaws are less responsive to movement.

Invisalign offers a variety of advantages over traditional braces, including their removability, which means patients can eat and clean their teeth normally, and their discreet appearance. However, braces are typically better equipped to treat more severe cases of misalignment, able to exert more force on your jaw and prompt movement. Your dentist will be able to guide you towards the best treatment option for your needs.

Wearing Invisalign shouldn’t be painful, but it can cause some soreness due to the pressure being exerted on your teeth. Each time you replace your aligners, you can expect a few days of discomfort while your teeth adapt, but you can relieve this using over-the-counter pain relief medication. Applying a warm compress and staying hydrated can also help soothe any soreness.

Whenever you eat or drink anything other than water, you should remove your aligners to prevent damaging them. Thankfully, the removability of your clear aligners means you can continue your regular diet.

To properly clean your aligners, rinse them with water and brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush, using a gentle liquid soap or regular toothpaste. Cleaning your aligners helps to remove any food particles or debris that could become trapped against your teeth when you wear them. Cleaning your aligners is an essential aspect of oral health.

Absolutely! Invisalign can effectively fix mild to moderate overbites by progressively moving your teeth into a more desirable position.

Invisalign is suitable for a wide variety of patients, though we do not recommend it for everyone. In particular, patients under 7 should not get Invisalign because their jaw is still developing. We also don’t recommend Invisalign to patients with severe misalignment; instead, we prefer more comprehensive orthodontics like fixed braces.
